Macon, Ga., Brazilian professional triathlete Felipe Bastos claimed 2nd place at the Southeast Long Course Championships with a 4:25:55 finish in the 1.2 mile swim lake swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run through the rolling hills of Georgia’s Bibb County.
This marks Bastos’ best finish at the Southeast long Course Championships after coming in 3rd place for the past three years. “Even though I was clearly still tired from the effort I put in at the TriAmerica event last weekend, I was able to exit the water in first place, and lead the race for the first hour. At that point I was overtaken by the three year reigning champion and eventual winner of this year’s Rock ‘N RollMan”, said Bastos.
The race, held each year on the same weekend, is known across the country as one of the toughest courses around. The challenge of the distance, the hills on the bike course and the very, very hot run course always make for an interesting race. Bastos added: “I really wanted to improve on the 3rd place finish I have had for past few years, so I decided to race smart, save some energy on the bike, and attack on the run. I ended up riding faster than last year, but still ended up with a great run.”
